Exam, Cleaning and

X-rays

A dental exam consists of three parts.  The soft-tissue exam covers the lips, tongue, cheeks, palete.  The hard-tissue exam covers the actual teeth.  Finally, the gums need to be measured to make sure they are staying healthy.  Most patients should have an exam every six months.

We usually take x-rays once a year to check for cavities.  Suspected problem teeth may receive further x-rays to look at the roots and surrounding jaw bone.

Cleaning is done to remove tartar which is the hard calcified buildup and plaque which is the soft germ layers.  Polishing is the final step to remove stains.

Dr. Lauer believes that it is a major benefit to the patient if he performs all exams and cleanings himself.
